TIME+SPACE PHOTO-ART BY PAUL LESSARD
Time is fleeting, reality can be altered, light is a constant intruder. These are the themes that go into my camera to create the "photo art" on display. What comes out of the camera is often a mystery even to me. I may have focused my camera on a carnival ride and opened the shutter for several minutes, but what developed is more mysterious and thought provoking.
The technique of time-lapse photography involves opening the camera shutter for an extended period of time. This allows the photographer to "paint" on the image with light. Exposures can be anywhere from a second to a minute to an hour or more. Flash lights, hand-held camera flash units, flares, and colored lights are used as paint brushes to enhance objects or add something new and different to the image.
Today’s computer software allows the photographer to manipulate an image after it has been developed or recorded. I use Photoshop to enhance and alter an image prior to the final print.
The term "Photo-Art" is used to sum up my work because I rarely rely on the simple click of a shutter and the buzz of a printer to provide an image, preferring to conceive a time-lapse session in advance, manipulate during exposure, then enhance with software.
I am also inspired by nature. I have included images that faithfully capture the beauty of the moment and others that were altered using the time-lapse technique.
I enjoy a good laugh so included in the exhibition are images that I set out to do as humorous photos and others that just turned out that way.
